Jets Sign Former Giants QB Tyrod Taylor and Ravens Guard John Simpson in Free Agency Splash

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets made some notable moves on the first day of free agency, addressing their biggest needs on offense. According to sources, they have agreed to terms with former New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor and former Baltimore Ravens guard John Simpson.

In their quest to secure a new backup for Aaron Rodgers and bolster their offensive line, the Jets have added Taylor and Simpson to their roster. This comes following the team expressed their desire to replace Zach Wilson as the backup quarterback and add three starters to their offensive line.

Taylor, a seasoned player who is familiar with the New York market, brings experience and knowledge to the team. However, there are concerns regarding his durability, as he has dealt with injuries throughout his career. In 2023, he started five games for the Giants, throwing for 1,341 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Unfortunately, his season was once once more interrupted by injury, as he suffered four fractured ribs in a midseason loss to the Jets.

As for Simpson, he joins the Jets following starting every game at left guard for the Ravens in 2023. He ranked 24th among guards in pass block win rate (92.5%) and 67th in run block win rate (66.3%). Simpson’s durability is evident, as he played a team-high 1,159 snaps last year. However, he was flagged for 10 penalties, including six for holding, which was the most on the team.

These moves by the Jets signify their commitment to improving their offense and providing support for their young quarterback, Zach Wilson. By adding Taylor as the backup and Simpson to the offensive line, they are addressing key areas of concern. With solid protection and experienced players, Wilson will have a better chance to succeed in the upcoming season.

This offseason, the Jets have been active in free agency, making strategic moves to strengthen their roster. With new additions to their offense, they are positioning themselves for a successful future. However, it remains to be seen how these acquisitions will impact the team’s overall performance.
