It is said that jukebox musicals are a sure-fire hit at the moment. The pop music listener somehow knows the hits of “Four Seasons” as oldies from the radio, but very few people know what the band of four former working-class children from New Jersey is all regarding. Nevertheless, the authors of the musical “Jersey Boys”, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, decided not to knit a new plot around the old quarrels, but, peppered with their songs, to retell the history of the band: from dishwashers to rock stars and once more back.
The success of the musical on Broadway, in London’s West End and then also in Singapore, South Africa and the Netherlands convinced the director of the Amstetten musical summer, Alex Balga, that he grabbed the stage rights that were still available in the German-speaking area last year. However, the courage to take risks in Amstetten did not have to be excessive. Even Balga’s predecessor, the former artistic director Johann Kropfreiter, who died much too early this year, had opted for Austrian premieres or even first performances in German-speaking countries and did well with it. The Amstetten audience has great confidence in the unknown and new territory that the Amstetten production is entering. After the last curtain fell on July 16, Balga and producer Christoph Heigl from the Amstettner Veranstaltungsbetriebe (AVB) can be extremely satisfied with the final accounts. 10,764 visitors made the pilgrimage to the Johann-Pölz-Halle for 18 shows – five more performances than originally planned, which had to be scheduled – which means a record occupancy rate of 98.70 percent. Balga is pleased that, in addition to the commercial aspects at the box office, the artistic aspect on stage was also right. Not only the consistently good reviews in the newspapers and on the radio would suggest that: “Standing ovations were the order of the day.”
