The actress appears surprised and upset.
Jennifer Aniston criticized JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, on social media for comments he made in 2021 about Democrats, whom he described as “a bunch of childless women and cat lovers.”
The 55-year-old actress, known for Friends, posted on her social media platforms an interview with Vance conducted during his Senate campaign in Ohio. The video has been widely shared since he was elected as the running mate of the Republican presidential candidate.
“I really can’t believe this is coming from a possible Vice President of the United States,” Aniston wrote on Instagram.
“All I can say is… Vance, I pray that your daughter is lucky enough to have her own children someday,” commented the actress.
The Republican vice presidential candidate has a 2-year-old daughter and two sons.
“I hope she doesn’t have to resort to in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a second option because you are trying to end that too,” she added.
“Unhappy country”
The actress – who has previously spoken about her attempts to have children through IVF – referenced that last month, Vance voted to block a bill aimed at guaranteeing access to these assisted reproductive methods nationwide.
The measure had been pushed by Democrats.
In the video, Vance criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for not having biological children, but being a stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff’s two children.
The senator told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that the U.S. was run by “a bunch of childless women and cat lovers, who have unhappy lives and have made unhappy decisions, so they want the rest of the country to be unhappy too.”
“Look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children. What sense does it make that we have handed over our country to people who really have no direct interest in it?” Vance commented at that time.
The BBC reached out to the campaign teams of both Republican candidates for comment on the actress’ remarks but did not receive a response.
More repercussions
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also referred to the comments earlier this week. The official focused on the adoption of his twins with Chasten.
“The really sad thing is that he said this after Chasten and I went through a pretty dramatic setback in our adoption journey. Maybe he didn’t know, but perhaps that’s why he shouldn’t talk about other people’s children,” Buttigieg said on CNN’s The Source.
It also generated a reaction from fans of singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who has no children and three cats.
“It’s bold for someone seeking votes to focus on ‘childless ladies and cat lovers’ when the leader of the ‘Ladies with Cats and No Kids’ is Taylor Swift,” wrote British author Caitlin Moran on X.
Another user on X shared the cover of Time magazine where Swift posed with one of her cats and wrote: “There’s no fury in hell like that of a childless lady with cats who has yet to endorse a presidential candidate.”
In 2022, Aniston told the press that she wished someone had recommended freezing her eggs when she was younger.
“It was a challenging road for me, the road to having babies. It was years of speculation… it was very hard. I went through IVF, drank Chinese teas, I did everything,” she said.
But she has said that “she regrets nothing”.
“I would have given anything if someone had told me: ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself that favor. At the time, you don’t think about it, so here I am today,” she told the magazine.
“And the boat has already sailed,” she added.
