Jeju’s tallest building covered in black smoke… “No alarm sounded”

Dream Tower, the tallest building in Jeju, caught fire today.

One cooling tower on the roof of the 38th floor was burnt down and all went out in 20 minutes.

Black smoke covered the area, causing a commotion for hotel guests and nearby residents to evacuate.

Reporter Park Joo-yeon covered the story.

Black smoke billows from the roof of the 38-story building.

Smoke spreads as if swallowing up the building in an instant and covers the whole area.

Fire trucks rush towards the smoke.

“That’s not falling, that… (smoke) is coming out a lot, but it’s a big deal. About 2:50pm today

A fire broke out on the roof of the Dream Tower building in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City.”

As the building where the hotel was located was engulfed in smoke, guests and staff hurriedly evacuated.

“The smoke seemed to come from the roof of the building upstairs. It smelled like smoke…”

When the fire broke out, the fire department issued the first stage of response and put in regarding 40 people and 14 equipment to put out the fire.

The fire that started on the roof of the Dream Tower was extinguished in regarding 20 minutes following burning part of the cooling tower.

The fire started in one of four cooling towers on the roof of the 38th floor of the northwest tower of the two towers.

There were no casualties as the incident occurred on the roof outside the building rather than indoors.

Dream Tower said that a fire broke out in an unused cooling tower for ice storage, and a fire occurred outside, so no separate alarm was sounded.

“I was in the office and there was a fire…there was a fire on the roof. So I came down because all the staff had to evacuate. I don’t know what happened.”

Police and fire departments have launched a joint investigation with the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
