International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated this Wednesday, February 21, seeks to raise awareness regarding the importance of having access to what has been called “the language of the heart.” According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), around 40 percent of the world’s population does not have access to education in a language they understand.
In this context, an international religious organization, Jehovah’s Witnesses, translates content into more than 1,000 languages, including dozens of indigenous languages and more than 100 sign languages.
Its official website, JW.ORG, which is the most translated in the world, includes digital Bibles, an interactive Bible course, videos and animations for children and young people, and articles on family life, mental health and happiness .
In Argentina
“Jehovah’s Witnesses do a great translation work around the world. In Argentina, content is translated into Chorote, Pilagá, Wichi, Toba, Romance, Santiago Quichua and Argentine Sign Language,” it said in a statement.
At the 2021 International Mother Language Congress and Festival, the religious organization was recognized for its translation work. In a presentation titled “Bringing People Together from All Countries and Languages: Jehovah’s Witnesses Translation Without Borders,” translator Elnathan Lee said: “Translators of Jehovah’s Witness publications see their work as a service to community. Their goal is to make translations that everyone understands easily, translations that teach and give a positive message to readers.”
Jehovah’s Witnesses have remote translation offices throughout the world. That allows translators to live where many people speak their language, and that helps achieve translations that are accurate and easy to understand.
“In 2020, as a result of diligent efforts by Witness translators, a great feat was accomplished during the pandemic. Despite limited resources and very little time, its 2020 annual convention program was translated into more than 500 languages and broadcast virtually around the world,” it was reported.
JW.ORG also offers resources for learning a new language. For example, the article “Is it worth learning a language?” and the “Tips for Learning a Language” activity sheet. More information: jw.org
