The NBA goes very very quickly, a few months outside the circuit and we forget you… So 16 years old? Thanks for the pessimism but Jeff Van Gundy disagrees. Appearing for the last time on an NBA bench in 2007 with Houston, Jeff wants to take advantage of his new unemployed status – he has just been fired from his job as a consultant at ESPN – to sound out the franchises regarding a return to the Big League.
On forced vacation for less than ten days, Jeff Van Gundy is already starting to twiddle his thumbs. So the former – on and off – coach of Team USA would be eyeing a return to the benches, according to Chris Mannix de Sports Illustrated. Stan’s little brother has a nice pedigree as an assistant and then a coach in the NBA but has been serving since 2007 withESPN as a consultant. The J unfortunately did not resist the huge wave of dismissals among the employees of the American chain, of which Jalen Rose was also the victim.
It is apparently the Free Agency also in the American media, since a few hours before the opening of the transfer window ESPN informed 20 people that they were going to take the door…
… don’t Jeff Van Gundy and Jalen Rose.

Assistant to the Knicks from 1989 to 1996, where he was able to learn from Pat Riley, Van Gundy then took the reins of the New York franchise until 2001. In the Big Apple, he had a series of NBA Finals , lost 4-1 once morest the Spurs in 1999, and a big hug to Alonzo Mourning during a Heat – Knicks fight. His last experience, at the Rockets between 2003 and 2007, was less successful in terms of postseason runs but allowed him to coach Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. Nice, even if he failed to take this duo further than a first round of Playoffs.
In short, a few seasons of experience in serious franchises and a good fifteen years behind the microphones analyzing all his little fellow technicians on a daily basis. Enough to make a franchise want to do a Van Gundance job? Obviously yes, but not as a head coach since he has already discussed with a few teams for an assistant position, without that succeeding for the moment.

We are talking regarding the Mavs and the Celtics, who have since completed their staff, and the Wizards, where the track seems much more serious alongside Wes Unseld Jr.. Accustomed to coaching big names like Patrick Ewing or Yao, Mr. Van Gundy would find himself in a completely different environment with Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma as leaders, and Bilal Coulibaly to develop. It’s a bet, but a little support for Unseld, not the most convincing in the capital, it wouldn’t be luxury.
