For a long time there was trouble regarding Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ super yacht. Soon the billionaire will finally be able to enjoy his new toy: The Koru – as the 127 meter long three-master was christened – has left the shipyard in the Netherlands and is currently sailing in the North Sea. The yacht left the port for a first test drive on February 13, according to photos from the organization Dutch Yachting.
The construction of the ship caused a controversy last year: Because the masts of the Koru were too high to pass under the historic Koningshaven Bridge following its completion, the shipbuilder Oceanco submitted an application to the authorities for the bridge to be partially dismantled.
But the plan outraged the people of Rotterdam, and there were calls on social media to greet the ship with rotten eggs. The shipbuilder then called off the action. Eventually the yacht was moved from her original place of construction to another shipyard at Greenport in Rotterdam without her masts. As the portal “The Cut” reports, the shipbuilder had towed the Koru out of the port in a cloak-and-dagger operation for fear of a vandalism attack.
The yacht, built entirely of aluminum and steel, is the second largest in the world. There is a swimming pool on three decks. The yacht accommodates 18 guests and has 40 crew members on board. A smaller, 250-foot escort vessel will contain a helipad for Bezos and his celebrity guests. In the future, luxury cars, jet skis, speedboats and even a small submarine will be constantly transported on the escort yacht, as reported by the “Daily Mail”.
The construction costs for the super yacht, which is even longer than a football field, amount to 500 million dollars (around 466 million Swiss francs). Just keeping the Koru running costs Bezos $25 million a year. The ship is part of a fleet of super yachts, helicopters and private jet aircraft owned by the entrepreneur.
