The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited following the collision
In the United States, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) submits a large number of vehicles to its crash tests each year, which makes it possible to determine which are the safest models on the market.
Over the years, the tests have been refined to reflect different situations that may be encountered by motorists. The rigor of the IIHS and its way of evaluating vehicles have forced, over the years, manufacturers to offer us products that are increasingly safe during impacts.
It’s all great. What is less is the performance of the Jeep Wrangler during these exercises, especially during the low overlap crash test. Basically, with the latter, only 25% of the front of the vehicle comes into contact with an obstacle, which causes it to rotate on itself.

Le Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2022
For the Jeep Wrangler, it’s rather worrying. In 2019, when the new generation of the model was subjected to the impact, it ended up on its side. The IIHS just submitted a 2022 model to the same exercise and the result was very similar. This tells us that no substantial improvements have been made by the manufacturer.
Vehicles subjected to impacts can receive four ratings from the IIHS; Good, Fair, Marginal and Poor. The marginal mention prevails this time.
There was some communication between the IIHS and Jeep following testing two years ago. When the Wrangler first rolled over, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles at the time) wondered if the result was related to the method IIHS engineers were using to secure the vehicle to the system that caused the crash. A second test was then carried out, in approval with FCA, then the same thing happened. The company then defended itself by advancing the vehicle’s production figures, the number of kilometers traveled by its users and the fact that it had no information indicating that this type of problem was common in the event of a collision.
On the IIHS website, we can see that the 2022 Wrangler Unlimited gets good marks for the moderate frontal overlap test, the one that puts regarding half of the front of the vehicle in an impact situation at some 65 km/ h. The Wrangler also gets good marks in the roof, head restraints and seats strength test. As for the side impact test, the marginal note also represents a faux pas.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited following the test
Around the world, Wrangler crash tests yield varying results. This tells us one thing; that there is still work to be done with this vehicle in terms of safety.
And on the road, without saying that we might have guessed the results in advance, let’s say that we note less stability due to the format and configuration of the vehicle. As much as it is fun to use, it can be a potential rollover hazard due to its styling, high ground clearance, tires, etc.
IIHS tests confirm this. It remains to be seen what will be done on the side of Stellantis now.
