May 31st is National Autonomous Vehicle Day in the United States (we forgive you if you had no idea) and Jeep is taking the opportunity to give a preview of its future technology designed for off-road driving.
Honestly, the idea is quite difficult to understand. Jeep owners who like to venture away from paved roads do so precisely for the feeling they experience behind the wheel and the control they have over the vehicle. Crossing a difficult trail, climbing rocky slopes and tackling mud are rewarding challenges.
Either way, a team of researchers and engineers led by Stellantis AI and Autonomous Driving Manager Neda Cvijetic recently put the latest prototypes of technology developed exclusively for the Jeep brand to the test.
As you can see in the short video above, two Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xes with plug-in hybrid engines were used for these tests. In the huge playground that is Moab, Utah, the vehicles overcome various obstacles on a background of sand and rocks.
According to Jeep, its self-driving technology can “enhance the experience of the most seasoned off-road enthusiasts as well as those new to the trails.” It will also help drivers in more difficult everyday conditions. Of course, it will always be possible to activate or deactivate it at the desired time, like any other driving aid.
“Our advanced off-road driving systems will help more customers in more countries around the world to join in and savor adventure,” said Christian Meunier, CEO of Jeep. These features and technology will find practical applications on and off the trail, in a wide range of riding conditions. »
Jeep will share a new, more comprehensive video later in the summer. How regarding an SUV that drives itself off the road? Do not hesitate to send us your comments.
