Jeddah: the country

The conjunction of the Moon in the first square phase with the planet Jupiter, the giant of the solar system, is observed in the skies of the Arab world after sunset today, and the beginning of the night until after midnight, in a phenomenon that can be easily seen with the naked eye.

The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra, stated that the moon will be in the first quarter phase, where half of the face appears illuminated and the other half is dark, giving it the ideal time to observe the topography of its surface with binoculars or a small telescope, because mountains, craters, etc. are very clear, especially on the The length of the line that separates the day side from the night side due to the interference of light and shadows, which gives a clear view.

He explained that the planet will appear as a bright white dot to the observer with the naked eye, and when he observes it through binoculars or a small telescope, he will see the planet’s disk and around it its four large moons, which are known as the “Galileo moons,” which are: Ganmede, Callisto, Europa, and Iowa, as they appear as small points of light near Jupiter.

He pointed out that the Moon and Jupiter will reach the moment of conjunction between them at 11:29 pm Mecca time, and will be separated by 2.37 degrees. Because of this large apparent distance, they will not appear together in the field of view of the telescope, but this is possible through binoculars.

It is noteworthy that during the night hours, all of these bodies apparently move towards the west as a result of the Earth’s rotation around its axis, but the real movement of the Moon is towards the east in relation to the stars, and by observing the position of the Moon at the same time every day, it is noted that its movement is towards the east in relation to the stars and planets in the zodiacal circle, so The next day, it will be noticed that the moon has moved away from Jupiter, rushing towards the east, which is its natural movement in its orbit around the Earth. During the next few days, the distance between the moon and the sun in the dome of the sky will increase every night, as the moon approaches the full moon, and instead of the moon rising in the afternoon, it will It is delayed until it rises with sunset.
