Moréacois Jean-Yves Joannic has just won the Individual Traditional Dance Championships Trophy which took place in Gourin, in Morbihan.
A first participation
Jean-Yves Jouannic is the founding president of the Celtic circle in his town, Moréac, Les Krollerion Mourieg, created in 1985.
“Today, I am honorary president. I am still part of the group, but I have given up my duties: room for young people! », says Jean-Yves. And precisely, since he currently has more time, Jean-Yves was able to participate for the first time in this competition which has been taking place for 11 years.
Around a hundred dancers, from the four Breton departments, competed in the final, following having participated in the qualifying competitions. They presented, by elimination groups, four compulsory dances, known from the spring.

“It takes endurance!” »
“This year, we had to convince the juries with a gavotte from Bas Léon (Finistère), a gavotte and jabadao in Rouzic fashion (Châteaulin country), a rond paludier (specific to Guérande), a koster c’hoed (which is danced in an area straddling Morbihan and Côtes-d’Armor),” explains Jean-Yves. The dances continue in front of the public all followingnoon.
Each performance lasts between 7 and 8 minutes and endurance plays a big part!

And despite his 69 years, he still has endurance, having worked on it for 50 years.
In the final, there remained between 16 and 20 competitors. And they did the same dances once more.

The Moréacois was the only one to be selected in all the finals.
“I obtained additional points in this way,” explains Jean-Yves. With 2nd place in koster c’hoed, the most physical of dances and which I had danced many times at the Tradi Deiz in Vannes, and 4th place in rond paludier, I was able to climb to the head of the ranking. »
Jean-Yves is thus the oldest among the winners of the Trophy, for 11 years. “I will, without doubt, run once more in 2024,” says this great enthusiast of Breton dances.
