Cameroonian Jean Onana, new OM midfielder, explained on Thursday that joining Marseille had been an “easy” choice for him, who calls himself “Marseillais at heart”.

“I had a phone call from the president and Mehdi (Benatia, Pablo Longoria’s sports advisor, editor’s note) to tell me regarding the project,” first told Onana, presented to the press on Thursday alongside Longoria.

“I’m from Marseillais at heart, since I was little I’ve been OM. So it was easy for me. I was still on the phone and I told them ‘it’s okay, I’m coming, I’m coming'”, said he declared once more.

The former Lille, Bordeaux and Lens player, who arrived in Marseille on loan from Besiktas, then explained that the move to OM of several Cameroonian players had also convinced him of the correctness of his choice.

“Many Cameroonians have passed through OM, like Franck Zambo-Anguissa, Stéphane Mbia, Nicolas Nkoulou… They inspired me, they made me love the club. Like all Africans, we are supporters of the ‘OM”, he assured.

Asked regarding his multiple club changes in recent seasons, the 24-year-old midfielder explained that “sometimes plans change, sometimes it doesn’t go as planned.” “But I am in the right place to stabilize,” he assured.

He also spoke of his “versatility”, saying he was “at the coach’s disposal” to play “defensive midfielder, relay midfielder or central defender”. “Where I feel best? On the pitch,” he concluded.
