Three weeks ago, French right-wing extremist Jean-Marie Le Pen was hospitalized following suffering a heart attack. Now the 94-year-old can leave the hospital once more. Her grandfather “amazed the doctors with his resilience,” said his granddaughter Marion Maréchal.
Longtime leader of the far right in France, Jean-Marie Le Pen, is back home following two weeks in hospital. The 94-year-old had a mild heart attack and is now doing better, said his granddaughter Marion Maréchal. Le Pen was admitted to a hospital in the Paris region on April 15 following suddenly complaining of severe exhaustion.
“True to his fierce character, he once once more amazed the doctors with his resilience,” Maréchal told Paris Première TV. She is the niece of right-wing populist Marine Le Pen, who is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Jean-Marie Le Pen co-founded the far-right Front National party in 1972 and led it for almost four decades. He ran five times unsuccessfully for the office of French President. In 2002, he made it into the second round of the presidential election once morest incumbent Jacques Chirac, sending shock waves across France.
In 2015, Jean-Marie Le Pen was expelled from the party following, among other things, he had repeatedly described the Nazi gas chambers as a “detail” of the history of the Second World War and had been sentenced several times for it. In 2018 he also lost the honorary chairmanship of the party. This was then renamed the Rassemblement National (National Rally Movement) under the leadership of Le Pen’s daughter Marine, which has since attempted to make the party electable by adopting a more moderate stance among middle-right and center-right voters. Despite his retirement from active politics, Jean-Marie Le Pen still enjoys influence on the French right.
