The Doel 3 nuclear reactor is entering its dismantling phase. In recent days, itsome have expressed the wish to reverse course and extend the activity of this reactor due to the energy crisis.
For Jean-Marc Nollet, we must stick to the closure decision taken in 2003 and “which has never been questioned for 19 years”. “Here, eight days before the deadline, following 7000 days of waiting, suddenly, the Minister of the Interior thinks that it might be postponed. No, you have to be serious. It’s amateurish.” believes Jean-Marc Nollet.
For the co-president of Ecolo, it is a question of security. It recalls the existence of “fissures”“13,000 à Doel 3″ et “3000 in Tihange 2”. “You can’t take any risks with nuclear security“, adds Jean-Marc Nollet. For him, these are reactors “problematic” who “cannot go beyond 40 years of life, which they have reached”.
The co-president of Ecolo sticks to the scenario approved by the government, that of an extension of two reactors, Doel 4 and Tihange 3, two more recent reactors, “those with much stronger safety standards”explains Jean-Marc Nollet.
Crisis solution in the current context, nuclear power is not, for Ecolo, a solution on which we must bet for the future to ensure energy independence. “There is no uranium in Europe, no basic source supply for nuclear”explains Jean-Marc Nollet. “In Belgium, we have wind, sun and if we look at the European level, we have enough by 2050 to move towards a 100% renewable objective”, adds the co-president of Ecolo. So, for Ecolo, we agree on, “in the transition phase negotiate the extension of two of the most recent and safest reactors”most, “Thinking that nuclear power is a solution is not one on a European scale”. And to recall in passing the problems encountered by French nuclear power plants, including “more than half is at a standstill”.
