Unfreezing of the index point for civil servants: the government defends itself from any “electoralism” and pleads exceptional circumstances

In an interview given to Parisianyesterday, the Minister of Transformation and the Public Service, Amélie de Montchalin, announced the thawing of the index point for civil servants and defended herself from any ulterior motive “electoralist”whereas since 2010 this system has only been upgraded once, in 2016.

Government spokesman Gabriel Attal spoke to him regarding the timing of the presidential election, saying: “It is a responsible measure that is taken at a time when we see it, there is inflation”. The latter continued: “It is legitimate that we also have a measure to protect civil servants from inflation”pointing out that the government “launches a round of negotiations”even if in the middle “there is an election deadline”.

While Mme Montchalin said in June that such a measure would be electoralist, Mr. Attal retorted: “There is still a situation that has evolved, with inflation that is settling in over time and at a high level. »

“I hear the opposition and I find that there is a certain cynicism [de leur part] to ask us in the morning for measures to protect the French (…) and, when measures are taken to protect the French, to reproach us for doing so. This is what we have seen on fuels”he also launched.

Minister Marlène Schiappa made a similar argument at the microphone of Europe 1. “But you know, if we don’t do anything and if we don’t make a decision, we are told that we have stopped everything a few days before the first round. And if we make decisions, the opposite is reproached to us”she said before adding: “We don’t decide the timing of the war in Ukraine. »

If the government has not raised the index point since 2017, it is because the circumstances are exceptional, she pleaded. In this context, “it is important to say that people who are in the public service [puissent] benefit from support on their purchasing power”.

Faced with criticism accusing the government and Mr. Macron of electoralism, Minister Julien Denormandie replied for his part: “ They are the same people who told us, when we took a decision a few days ago on petrol, “As luck would have it, it’s before the elections”. Well yes, the emergency is now. »
