In 2001, Jean-Claude Van Damme predicted that humans would watch movies on our cell phones. The nicknamed “Brussels Muscle” was not at all wrong with his vision of what the future would be like.
Many people consider The Simpsons to be the Nostradamus of the modern world. For several decades now, the yellow family has impressed viewers by airing episodes that have given a glimpse into the future. From the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar World Cup, Donald Trump’s presidential election, and even the COVID-19 pandemic, are some of the predictions of the animated series created by Matt Groening.
Something very similar happened to the legendary actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. Beyond being a martial arts specialist, Van Damme also has the skills of a fortune teller since a couple of decades ago he made a joke regarding the future that today is a reality for everyone. It seems that at that time, the Bloody Contact actor was not aware that real life is stranger than fiction and that, as Walt Disney said: “if you can dream it, you can do it.”
“We are going to distribute the films by telephone, this will be the first time we do it,” were the words of the man also known as “The Brussels Muscles” in June 2001 while he was recording the French program Everybody’s Talking About That. On that date, the Street Fighter (The Last Battle) actor announced that he was working on a new project focused on the digital distribution of films, all in front of an audience incredulous of his vision.
“I’m going to try to enter the world of media on the Internet. We are going to announce a movie on the Internet, from each country, then we will go to the web and then we will do it with the antennas,” explained the actor in front of the audience. They didn’t seem to take it seriously. “We will be able to reach 250 million viewers,” said Van Damme regarding something that exists today with streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max, which have millions of users who witness the incredible power of the internet to distribute content. to every corner of the world.
Furthermore, the Kung Fu Panda 3 actor had a vision for how costs might be reduced and viewers wouldn’t have to pay as much for a movie: “That way, all the people in the world, the people who don’t have money, press a button, they don’t have to wait 40 hours for the download… (…) I can’t wait for the satellite, that wastes too much money, it costs millions of dollars. So we found a system, thanks to the network.” Although he did not make his fortune in streaming, Jean-Claude Van Damme did have a clear vision of how the entertainment medium was going to change with the internet.
