The first JDD version of Geoffroy Lejeune, a journalist marked on the far right, was published overnight from Saturday to Sunday (Martin LELIEVRE)
A weekly designed by “volunteers”, faithful to its “markers”, “perfectly in the news” and “very committed”: following a historic strike of forty days, the JDD version Geoffroy Lejeune, journalist marked on the far right , was released overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
“He defends fine causes (…) This is a number that will perhaps not mark the history of France but at least the history of the press”, also commented on the new editorial director during of his first public intervention on Europe 1 (radio of the Lagardère group, like the JDD) on Sunday.
This first surprise edition since June 22 was previously announced for mid-August. This is a 32-page issue (20 less than the previous one), the front page of which is devoted to insecurity and justice following the death of a 15-year-old boy stabbed to death on July 22 in the Eure.
The publication was made in a rather “surreal” atmosphere with very few members of the outgoing editorial staff and many “volunteers”, close to Mr. Lejeune or employees of Lagardère.
We thus find the signatures of Charlotte d’Ornellas and Raphaël Stainville (former of Valeurs Actuelles, like the editorial director), of Pascal Praud, journalist at Europe 1 and CNews, Jacques Vendroux, journalist at Europe 1, or even Eric Naulleau (ex-debating companion of Eric Zemmour, whom Mr. Lejeune supported in the presidential election of 2022).
– “Strike” –
“A UNE on this subject, that changes”, rejoiced on the X platform (ex-Twitter) the deputy RN Thierry Mariani, wishing “good luck to Geoffroy Lejeune and his team to wake up the JDD”. “It was time for a newspaper to dare to say it,” added his colleague Gilbert Collard.
The left denounces the interview given by the Secretary of State for the City Sabrina Agresti-Roubache: “The Macron government endorses the coup de force of the JDD”, commented on X the First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure . “A macronist minister! After having shone by her silence on the takeover of the JDD by the far right, the macronie is accelerating its trivialization. Scandalous!”, Added Manon Aubry, rebellious MEP.

The situation of the weekly, in the process of being taken over by Vivendi (Vincent Bolloré’s group, owning Canal+ and its channels, following a successful takeover bid by the Lagardère group), has reignited the debate on media concentration in hands of a few large private groups and the legislation governing their operation. Conditioning of aid to the press, strengthening of the power of the editorial staff vis-à-vis the shareholders: several avenues are mentioned but none of them achieves a consensus.
In an interview with Ouest France on Saturday, the Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak considered that “there is every reason to worry” regarding the editorial line, while recalling that “the opinion press has the right to to exist in France is part of the pluralism of the press, so we can neither constrain the freedom of the press, nor constrain the freedom of enterprise”.
The subject will be on the menu in September of the States General of Information announced by the Elysée.
– Competing project? –
According to information from Marianne, Rodolphe Saadé, boss of the shipowner CMA CGM and owner of the Marseilles daily La Provence, the economic site La Tribune and the Brut video platform, is working to launch a new generalist national daily distributed on weekends, like the JDD. Asked by AFP on Saturday, the group declined to comment.
On Tuesday, an agreement was reached between the strikers and the management of the Lagardère group, ending the historic editorial strike, which refused to be led by Geoffroy Lejeune.
The 34-year-old journalist sparked several controversies, in particular when the weekly Valeurs Actuelles, under his direction, was sentenced to a suspended fine of 1,000 euros for public insult of a racist nature once morest LFI deputy Danièle Obono.
Even if Arnaud Lagardère, the boss of the group, denies it, many observers see in this appointment the hand of Vincent Bolloré, billionaire with opinions deemed ultra-conservative.
