Automotive companies eagerly await JD Power’s U.S. Vehicle Reliability Study each year. The 2024 edition is now available. One of America’s most iconic brands came in last place.
The study looks at factors following cars are owned for three years.
The metrics cover 184 potential issues in nine categories:
Climate
Driving assistance
Driving experience
Exterior
Features/controls/displays
Infotainment
Interior
Powertrain
Seating
The study reflects the results of JD Power Initial Quality, which surveys people following they have owned a car for 90 days. Frank Hanley, Senior Director of Automotive Benchmarking at JD Power, commented:
“This can probably be attributed to the tumultuous era during which these vehicles were built, and owners keep their vehicles much longer.”
Scores are reported based on the problem per 100 vehicles (PP100). The average score across all brands was 190. One trend that hasn’t changed in recent years is that people find the infotainment and driver assistance functions too complex and prone to developing problems.
As has been the case for decades, Japanese models tend to do well and this year they took the top two spots. Lexus (Toyota’s luxury brand) finished first with a 135 PP100. Toyota was second with 147. Among American manufacturers, Buick, a General Motors brand, scored 149.
America’s worst car brand
At the end of the list, Chrysler It got a score of 310, which was by far the worst. The brand with the second worst PP100 was Audi, one of Germany’s luxury cars, with a score of 275.
Chrysler was among the most important brands in the history of the American automobile industry. For decades it was the third of the Big Three, along with GM and Ford.
It is currently owned by Stellantis, an Italy-based manufacturer that also owns Dodge, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Opel, Peugeot and Jeep.
We always insist on pointing out that both Stellantis and General Motors are the worst car brands sold in the United States.
It once had a line of more than a dozen models. It now only sells the Pacifica and Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid minivans. It just discontinued its only sedan, the 300.
According to JD Power, these are the five worst car brands in America:
Chrysler (310)
Audi (275)
Land Rover (268)
Volkswagen (267)
Lincoln (251)
