JBL BAR800 True Wireless Home Theater System Review: A Comprehensive Assessment and Comparison with JBL BAR9.1

When we were renovating the house, due to the busy work schedule, we were unable to follow up on the entire construction process. Although the contractor was an acquaintance and the overall decoration was basically no big problem, some details were not fully considered when designing the decoration plan. Before the renovation, I thought regarding pre-embedding audio cables and setting up a home theater, which would be great for playing games, watching movies, or listening to music. But I forgot regarding it when I was making the plan. I suddenly remembered it following I moved in, but it was too late. At that time, home theaters were basically wired. If I wanted to do it now, I might only use open wiring, which would not look good. , can only make do with it. This time I bought the JBL BAR800 true wireless movie tycoon. This home theater set has true 5.1.2 channels, detachable rear surround speakers, supports wireless connections, has a 300W subwoofer, 720W peak power, and supports Dolby Atmos. I had been paying attention to JBL BAR9.1 before, until JBL BAR800 appeared, I went to the local authorized store to try it out, and finally bought the latter. Personally, I think the JBL BAR800 true wireless movie breaker has better sound quality, and it also supports JBL APP, while JBL BAR9.1 does not support APP.

The main body of the JBL BAR800 true wireless speaker is a sound bar paired with a subwoofer. Two back surround speakers can be installed on both sides of the sound bar, so the overall length is quite long. The full size is 1174*120*56mm, and the length without the back surround speakers is only 884mm. The soundbar power of JBL BAR800 is 340W.

The soundbar has 3 (46*90) mm track driver units, 3 0.75-inch tweeter units, and 2 2.75-inch top-exit full-range driver units.

JBL BAR800 has the JBL brand logo designed in the middle of the soundbar.

On the right side of the logo, there are indicator lights and touch buttons. The material on the top of the fuselage is relatively delicate and smooth, and it is easy to clean and take care of. There is always a lot of dust here in my house, so I need to consider this aspect. No matter whether it is dry wipe or wet wipe, there will be no traces left following cleaning. , I am quite satisfied with this.

The tops of both sides of the fuselage are designed with mesh holes, which are the sound holes for the left and right sky channels. The one on the far right is the rear surround channel speaker.

The detachable wirelessly connected back surround channel speakers are the main reason why I bought the JBL BAR800. After all, there were no reserved wires at the beginning, and now I can only achieve stereo surround sound through this wireless connection method. Of course, this wireless connection method is more convenient. You don’t have to worry regarding incompatibility or problems with the pre-embedded wires. It is also convenient to replace and upgrade later, which saves trouble and worry. The soundbar and back surround speakers of JBL BAR800 are magnetically connected through metal contacts, and the connection is very strong. The disassembled soundbar and rear surround speakers can be installed with decorative covers, which not only look good but also protect the metal contacts.

The single output power of the rear surround speaker is 40W, and it has a built-in (46*90) mm track-shaped driver unit. It has a built-in lithium battery with a capacity of 3283mAh, which is great. I remember that I have seen some home theater products that can achieve wireless connection, but the surround speakers need to be plugged in, which is quite inconvenient. The two rear surround speakers of JBL BAR800 are designed with Type-C charging ports (JBL BAR9.1 is a Micro USB charging port because it is an earlier product), which can be charged independently. Of course, it can also be connected to the sound wall for charging. These two back surround speakers are also designed with wall mounting holes. The bottom of the rear surround speakers is also designed with a battery compartment to facilitate later battery maintenance or replacement. This design is well received.

The interfaces of JBL BAR800 are relatively rich. From left to right, there are power jack, USB interface, RJ45 network port, HDMI IN, HDMI OUT (supports TV ARC and eARC) and optical audio interface.

JBL BAR800 is equipped with a 10-inch wireless subwoofer with a size of 305*305*440.4mm and an output power of 300W. The soundbar I originally used did not have such an independent subwoofer. This 10-inch wireless subwoofer was quite shocking in the sound of gunfire and explosions in the war scene, and the roar of the engine during the vehicle chase. From a closer position, I can feel a wave of sound rushing towards me, which is full of power and feels really enjoyable.

The top of the subwoofer is also designed with the JBL brand logo.

As you can see from the back of the subwoofer, there is only one power jack reserved here, so there is no need to connect additional wires to the soundbar, which makes placement much more convenient. There is a button designed above the jack, which is used for pairing. , but the JBL BAR800 presets have been paired. Further up is the mirror hole.

The middle of the bottom is where the 10-inch woofer of the subwoofer is located.

In terms of accessories, there is a slim remote control and matching battery, and the cable is equipped with an HDMI cable and 2 power cables. It is also equipped with wall-mounted components and paper documents such as instructions.

After powering on the JBL BAR800, the LCD screen hidden in front of the buttons will display text. Through the fine metal mesh, the LCD screen display has a dot matrix feel. Subsequent remote control operations such as switching audio sources and adjusting volume will have corresponding English displays here.

The two back surround speakers and subwoofer are paired by default at the factory. Although they are connected wirelessly, they all produce sound simultaneously with the soundbar. The rear surround speakers need to press the switch. After turning on, the indicator light near the back of the grille will light up.

It supports JBL APP, which is one of the key reasons why I chose JBL BAR800 instead of JBL BAR9.1. Because more detailed adjustments can be made in the APP and the firmware can be upgraded, JBL BAR800 can always be maintained in good condition, which is incomparable to JBL BAR9.1. Use the mobile APP to connect to JBL BAR800, and then connect JBL BAR800 to WIFI.

After adding it, you can see that JBL BAR800 is WIFI online. In the APP, there are many built-in music to choose from, but these need to be registered and logged in to use. In addition, the APP can also be used as a remote control, and there is an equalizer to freely set the high, medium and bass. In addition, the APP can also control the sound effects of the rear surround speakers. And the APP also provides audio calibration function.

The audio calibration function is mainly focused on the placement and sound effects between the rear surround speakers and the sound bar. According to the operation, the audio calibration can be easily completed. Maximize the sound quality of your soundbar and surround back speakers.

I placed the two surround back speakers once morest the wall of the sofa.

“The Expendables 4” was played on TV. There were a lot of gun battles, explosions, and vehicle chases. Compared with the soundbar speakers I used before, the effect of JBL BAR800 was more shocking, thanks to the two rear surround speakers. The sound is not only in the front, but also in the rear. The overall sound effect is quite three-dimensional. The resolution of the rear surround speakers is also quite good, giving people an immersive feeling. Compared with the previous sound bar that only positioned the sound in the front, the JBL BAR800 is much better in terms of three-dimensional surround sound and three-band sound quality.

At the same time, I also played “Shazam 2” on the NAS. I used to like going to the cinema to watch movies, but following three years of silence, I don’t like it very much anymore. Although I have collected a lot of Blu-ray original disc resources, However, the previous speaker effect has always been unsatisfactory, and JBL BAR800 makes up for this regret.

There are a lot of big games that can be played on the PS5. When I bought the PS5, I was mainly interested in Horizon: Forbidden West, which is currently a PS exclusive game. I played the first generation on my computer and it was quite amazing, so the second generation I started buying PS5 and games as soon as it was released. Compared with the computer screen, a larger TV can have better and more shocking effects, and the picture quality of the PS5 version is better than the PS4 version, coupled with the shock of JBL BAR800 Sound effects, this is the game environment I want. Whether it is the detailed sounds of characters sneaking, the sounds of battles with mechanical monsters, and the ubiquitous BGM, it makes people immersed in it.

As I said before, I have gone to local authorized stores to listen to JBL BAR800 and JBL BAR9.1. After all, the store is a public place with serious ambient sound interference, so the audition is only a rough idea. You can better experience it at home. Through the test of lossless music and audition discs, I feel that the sound quality of JBL BAR800 really makes me satisfied. Although the bass is shocking, it is not too loud because of the 10-inch subwoofer. This is better than JBL BAR9.1 , this is the feeling when I went to the authorized store to listen to it. The mid-range vocals are clear and natural, sounding quite comfortable, and the treble is clear and translucent, not a bit boring like JBL BAR9.1. The overall performance is very good.

From the price positioning point of view, JBL BAR800 is an alternative to JBL BAR9.1. After using it at home during this period, I felt that it was better when I compared and listened to it in the authorized store from various aspects such as movies, games and music playback. The feeling is correct, JBL BAR800 is better than JBL BAR9.1, the three-band is more balanced, the sound details and vocal performance are also better, and it also supports the JBL ONE APP, which can carry out more detailed aspects settings. So I think JBL BAR800 is a very good iterative product. If compared to my original soundbar, the improvement is huge. For friends like me who have no embedded wires in their decoration and want to pursue stereo surround sound, or who have higher requirements for home theater sound quality, you might as well try this JBL BAR800 true wireless movie tycoon.
