Jaylen Brown understands how the NBA works. He does not express himself on all the subjects which concern him, but he listens. And he knows full well that his Boston Celtics, a franchise he has been defending since joining the league in 2016, were thinking of trading him for Kevin Durant last summer. The proposed package did not appeal to the Brooklyn Nets and KD remained in New York before eventually being sent to the Phoenix Suns. The case is closed. But is it really in the mind of the young rear of Massachusetts?
Asked regarding his future, Brown did not want to comment too much on his commitment to Boston. He preferred to kick skillfully. Since then, the rumors have grown. The Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets would be two teams ready to build anything around him. The Portland Trail Blazers, finally especially their supporters, dream of a possible association with Damian Lillard.
The Hawks want a third star and dream of Jaylen Brown
But maybe that will remain in the realm of fantasy. Indeed, by being named in the second best five of the season, Jaylen Brown is now likely to stay at the Celtics for a few more years. For what ? Because here he is eligible for the “super max”, an extension which represents 35% of the Cap (compared to 30% for the classic max contracts). And 5%, on such amounts, makes the difference. Especially since Boston can offer him an extra year.
The “super max” gives the status of “ designated player and is reserved for players who have achieved a certain number of achievements before their first “real” free agency. Brown can therefore obtain 290 million over 5 years. A contract that cannot be refused, at least historically: no one has yet declined such an extension.
Jayson Tatum will also be eligible for this extension (for an even higher amount: 308 million) next season. The Celtics have an interest in breaking the wallet anyway to keep their two All-Stars. And they intend to do so.
