Jay Leno requests guardianship of his wife following dementia diagnosis credit:Bang Showbiz
Jay Leno filed for guardianship of his wife Mavis.
The former ‘Tonight Show’ host took legal steps Friday to take charge of his wife’s affairs following she was diagnosed with dementia, explaining in court documents obtained by TMZ that he wants to create a living trust for his spouse to ensure that she has ‘managed assets’ to provide future care in the event of her death.
The 73-year-old comedian stated that his wife, whom he married in 1980, is not opposed to a guardianship being established and does not prefer that another person act as guardian.
Jay also asked the judge to approve that Mavis, 77, not attend a court hearing on the matter because it would be ‘detrimental to her physical and mental health.’
It is unclear when Mavis’ condition was diagnosed, but the pair have been seen together, most recently in November.
And when the former talk show host was recovering from burns he suffered in a house fire in 2022, Dr. Peter Grossman, a physician and plastic surgeon at the Grossman Burn Center and West Hills Hospital, where he was treated Jay said Mavis was ‘obviously very worried’ regarding her spouse.
And he added:
‘She is by his side. They have a very close relationship and she is doing as well as can be expected from a wife concerned regarding her husband.’
And Jay admitted that following he was injured, his first thoughts were of his wife, and he opted to go home first rather than go straight to the Los Angeles burn clinic that doctors had recommended.
He explained on ‘Today’ in December 2022:
‘My wife no longer drives and I didn’t want her to be stuck not knowing what was happening. She just seemed like the right thing to do and I think she was.’
Host Hoda Kotb asked:
‘So you loved your wife more than you cared regarding yourself?’
Jay replied, ‘Yeah, that’s it!’
