Javier Milei’s trip to Mexico is in doubt

BUENOS AIRES (EFE).— The Argentine government yesterday questioned the trip to Mexico that President Javier Milei had planned to make next Friday to participate in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and meet with businessmen from that country, according to official sources.

“The trip planned by President Javier Milei for this week to Mexico is not confirmed,” said presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni on his social networks, minutes after having confirmed the trip during his daily press conference at the Casa Rosada (headquarters of the Executive).

“There is no plan to meet with (Mexican President Manuel) López Obrador and the purpose of the trip is also different, it is a meeting with businessmen, as always, with characteristics that may be relevant for the future of Argentina,” Adorni said yesterday morning in response to a question about a possible meeting between the two leaders.

“This will be on the 23rd. On the 24th he will participate in the CPAC but on Wednesday I will be presenting the agenda, but it will be around that,” he added, minutes before announcing, through his official WhatsApp channel, that the trip was in doubt.

Another Argentine government spokesman consulted by EFE yesterday reiterated, after Adorni’s announcement, that the trip to Mexico has not been confirmed.

Last week, the Mexican president ruled out meeting with Milei, although he clarified that there was “no problem” with the Argentine leader visiting his country.

“I do not agree with his way of thinking and his way of being; however, he is free and the government of Mexico is one thing, and the people of Mexico are another thing, and our people have always been very hospitable, fraternal and respectful,” said López Obrador, who in recent months called Milei a “conservative fascist.”

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum also stressed that the Argentine president’s visit was not official and considered that the libertarian politician is free to travel to CPAC.
