Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) scored a double blow at Ardooie during the first stage of the Tour du Benelux. Our compatriot won the sprint and is wearing the leader’s jersey.

The green jersey of the last Tour de France won his eleventh victory of the season, the 34th of his career. The Flame of Ham confirms that he is one of the best sprinters on the planet. Our compatriot dominates a very high level Top 5. He advances in order Tim Merlier, Olav Kooy, Arnaud DeLie et Dylan Groenewegen. With Arne Marit (8th), Belgium places four riders among the first eight.

The Bull of Lescheret, who extended at Lotto-Dstny on Wednesday, probably found himself in front a little too early. Well wedged in his wheel, Philipsen made his speed speak. He overwhelmed him to pick up the victory.

Five riders made up a first breakaway following 30 km of racing with three Belgians Ceriel Desal et Ludovic Robeet (Bingoal-WB), Aaron VanPoucke (Flanders-Baloise), as well as the German Jonas slip (EF Education-EasyPost) and l’Italien Alexander Covi.

The last three fugitives, Covi, Desal and Rutsch, were caught by the peloton 18 km from the finish, shortly before the last lap of the local circuit. Philipsen then settled the peloton brilliantly.

Au GeneralPhilipsen took the lead two seconds ahead of Alexander Covi. The Italian, present in the breakaway, grabbed bonuses throughout the day.

This Thursday, Philipsen will have a lot to do to keep his leader’s jersey in the 13.6 km time trial in Sluis.
