Jason Schwartzman: It definitely wasn’t planned. Ben and I were just making music together, just for fun. Before we knew it, we had enough material to feel like it was something special, something worth reintroducing to the world as Coconut Records.
It’s no secret you’ve been active in the film world lately. How do you balance yoru passion for acting with the creative drive to make music?
JS: They’re both such fulfilling parts of my life. Acting allows me to step into different people’s shoes,explore narratives,and collaborate with astonishing teams. Music, conversely, is a more personal, intimate expression. It’s where I can truly let go and be myself. Sometimes they feed each other, like when I write music inspired by a character or a scene.
What can fans expect from the new Coconut Records music? This is your first release as the “Goats” score in 2012.
JS: I think it’s a natural progression from what we’ve done before.There are definitely elements that evoke that classic Coconut Records sound, but there are also some new textures and influences. It’s a bit more introspective and mature than our earlier work, I’d say.
