Jasmine Paolini reaches Wimbledon final

Jasmine Paolini rallied once morest Donna Vekic in what would become the longest women’s semifinal match at Wimbledon, following losing the first set and being two games down in the final two sets and trailing by a break in the third.

Paolini had never won a match at the All England Club until last week and will now play in his second consecutive Grand Slam final thanks to a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory over Vekic in a match that lasted two hours and 51 minutes.

“I will always remember this duel,” said the seventh seeded Italian who will face Barbora Krejcikova (31) for the title tomorrow.

“It was a roller coaster of emotions,” he added.

The same can be said of the other semi-final, which, although it lasted 44 minutes less, included some twists and turns for the 2021 French Open champion, Krejcikova, to come back and eliminate Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Whoever wins tomorrow’s match will become only the eighth woman in eight years to win the title at the All England Club.

Krejcikova trailed 4-0 and won four of five games to take the second set before breaking for a 5-3 lead in the third once morest Rybakina, who entered the match with a 19-2 record at the All England Club.

But it did not come close to the drama of the duel between Paolini and her rival from the Czech Republic.

Consider this: Vekic, making his Grand Slam semifinal debut, finished yesterday’s match with more points (118-111), winners (42-26) and breaks of serve (4-3).

“She had winning shots from all sides,” the Italian tennis player acknowledged.

But the seventh seed never gave up and eventually converted her third match point. This display on the grass of the All England Club comes following she reached the final on clay last month at Roland Garros and lost to Iga Swiatek.

Complicated mission

Paolini’s victory was not easy for either of them. Vekic at times appeared distraught, crying between points or sitting in her chair in the third set. She iced her right forearm between games or turned toward the visitors’ box.

The Italian had never made it past the second round of a major tournament (losing in the first or second round in 16 consecutive appearances) until reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open in January. She was also 0-3 at Wimbledon.

He was without a win on turf until the prep event at Eastbourne last month.

Paolini will now play her first final once morest No. 31 in the rankings, Czech Barbora Krejcíkova, which will be played tomorrow at 7 a.m. The match can be watched on ESPN or from the Disney+ app.— AP
