In the Asian country life expectancy increased and year after year the growth of the population deepens. The government seeks to lighten the pension system.

According to official records, in 2022 the number of babies born in Japan fell below the 800.000 and it is the first time in more than a century that such a low figure has been reached.

For reference, in the 1970s, the number of births exceeded two million.

Although it is a widespread phenomenon in several countries, in Japan it is more serious because life expectancy has increased.

This affects the pension system because it implies more elderly people and fewer workers to support them.

Japan is the country with the oldest population in the world after Monaco, according to data from the world Bank and health services and pension payments are squeezed to the maximum.

Faced with this dilemma, the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, announced that it will double the government’s fiscal spending on programs that promote birth rates by supporting the upbringing of children.

The disbursement would be around 4% of the Domestic Gross Product.

The average number of children a Japanese woman has is 1.3 and is one of the lowest rates in the world. The lowest has it South Korea with 0.78%.

Japanese governments have rejected immigration as a possible solution to chronic labor shortages and growing pressure on the financing of health and social security.
