Some foreign media reported that the supercomputer used by the Open Academic Research Unit of Kyoto University accidentally deleted nearly 77TB of files during backup. A total of 34.01 million research data files were deleted, and there were 14 research units involved.
Kyoto University responded that the LARGE0 file system of the backup supercomputer system manufactured by Hewlett-Packard Co. of Japan had a software defect between approximately 5:30 pm on December 14, 2021 and approximately 12:00 noon on December 16, resulting in accidental deletion of nearly 77TB files, a total of approximately 34.01 million research data files were deleted, and a total of 14 research units were involved.
When the program that backed up the supercomputer system deleted old log files, it deleted the files in the /LARGE0 directory by mistake. Even if it was rescued followingwards, there were still 28TB of research data that might not be recovered. The official said that the use of the find command to find and delete log files more than 10 days old is included in the backup script, but the script is modified following it is modified, so that bash releases the script by overwriting the script when the shell script is running. The shell script is executed following reloading the modification. The find command contains undefined variables, so that the file in /LARGE0 is deleted by mistake.
Kyoto University expects to restore the backup at the end of January, but the files that disappeared before the backup cannot be restored. In addition, incremental backups will be kept and operational management will be improved to prevent accidental deletion of files once more. Hewlett-Packard Co. of Japan promised to compensate and repair the victims, and will take all responsibilities.
