Investing.com – Japan equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the , and sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Tokyo, Japan, it rose 1.88%, hitting a new high.

The best performers of the session were Japan’s Itochu Corporation Ltd (TYO:), which rose 4.50% or 274.00 points to trade at 6,365.00 at the close. At the same time, KDDI Corporation (TYO:) rose 4.21% (196.00 points) to end at 4,851.00; Hitachi Corporation (TYO:) rose 4.20% (445.00 points) to 11,045.00 in late trade.

The worst performing stocks on the disk were Yamato Holdings (TYO:), which fell 3.85% (106.00 points) to settle at 2,646.00. Rakuten AG (TYO:) declined 2.44% or 16.10 points to end at 643.70. SKY Perfect JSAT Holdings Inc. (TYO:) was down 1.65% or 12.00 points to 717.00.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, 2,064 stocks rose, which exceeded the number of stocks that closed lower – 1,611. At the same time, 219 stocks did not rise or fall, which was basically the same.

Implied volatility, a measure of Nikkei 225 options, rose 4.01% to 19.20.

The price of the February options contract on WTI crude oil futures rose 0.76% (0.54 points) to $71.91. For the rest of the futures, the price of London Brent crude oil futures contract for March delivery rose 0.78% (0.60 points) to quote $77.40, while the February gold futures contract rose 0.54% (10.85) to trade at $2,038.65.

USD/JPY fell 0.20% to 145.43; at the same time, EUR/JPY fell 0.13% to 159.74.
