A Japanese chemical tanker was hit on Saturday 200 nautical miles (370 km) off the coast of India by an “attack drone fired from Iran,” the US Department of Defense announced in a statement.

The attack, which occurred at 10:00 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT), did not cause any injuries, and a fire was extinguished, added the Pentagon, according to which the American army “remains in communication with the ship while it continues on its way to a destination in India. The ship, the Chem Pluto, sails under the flag of Liberia and is operated by a Dutch company, the American ministry said.

The incident comes as a wave of attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels with drones and missiles threatens to disrupt global trade flows, with major shipping firms cutting off passage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which separates the Arabian Peninsula from Africa. The Houthis, who control the Yemeni capital Sanaa, are “part of the axis of resistance” once morest Israel, which includes other groups supported by Iran, such as Palestinian Hamas or Lebanese Hezbollah.
