Japanese scientists have created a vaccine that targets toxic proteins in the brain

In a new study presented at the scientific session American Heart Association in 2023, scientists have described a vaccine once morest Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers at the Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan successfully tested it on laboratory mice.

How does the vaccine work?

The vaccine targets a protein that is produced in aging cells, the scientists say. When cells age, they stop dividing and instead of leaving the body, they stay in it and cause inflammation.

One such protein is the aging-associated glycoprotein SAGP. Previous research has shown that it is produced in high amounts in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mouse experiments

During the experiments, the scientists injected the SAGP vaccine or a placebo into young mice genetically engineered to develop an accumulation of amyloid plaques and manifest Alzheimer’s disease. The animals were then tested with behavioral tests, and then their brains were examined.

The vaccinated mice performed better in the tests – they completed the maze faster and behaved like healthy animals. The vaccine also significantly reduced the deposits of protein plaques in the brain that are associated with dementia symptoms.

It is important to note that the research is in its early stages, and the vaccine is far from being tested in humans. However, the discovery offers a potential avenue for preventing and even treating Alzheimer’s, a disease that affects millions of people and has yet to be cured.
