An experimental Alzheimer’s vaccine developed by scientists in Japan has shown promise in a mouse study. This week it was presented during the event “Scientific Sessions 2023” a poster regarding the study. The research team for the experimental vaccine is made up mainly of academics from the Juntondo University.

The study tested mice bred to have brains that develop the same kind of gradual destruction of neurons seen in humans with Alzheimer’s. This damage is believed to be caused by the gradual buildup of a misfolded form of the beta-amyloid protein.
To carry out the research, the scientists divided the population of mice into two groups, where only one of them received the real vaccine. In those who were vaccinated, signs of reduced inflammation and less amyloid deposits were identified, as well as low levels of cells that express SAGP, a glycoprotein associated with cell aging, the stage where they stop dividing.
According to the analyses, the vaccine made the mice behave more like normal mice compared to the unvaccinated ones. Anxiety behavior was observed as they aged, a trait that tends to disappear in people who have advanced-stage Alzheimer’s. Additionally, it was shown to be more aware of its surroundings during maze tests.
Chieh-Lun Hsiao, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology and Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Juntondo, is lead author of the study and said:
Previous studies using different vaccines to treat Alzheimer’s disease in mouse models were successful in reducing amyloid plaque deposits and inflammatory factors, however what makes our study different is that our SAGP vaccine also changed the behavior of these mice for the better .
What is the potential in the new vaccine?
At the moment, the mouse study represents just the beginning of Alzheimer’s vaccine development. There still need to be more studies to validate the results and thus be able to test in humans, before carrying out large-scale tests.
