[서울=뉴시스]Reporter Lee Jae-joon = The Asahi Shimbun reported on the 29th that the governments of Korea and Japan are coordinating the direction of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Korea on May 7-8.
Citing multiple government officials from Korea and Japan, the newspaper reported that Prime Minister Kishida plans to visit Korea as a return visit to President Yoon Seok-yeol, who visited Japan in March.
During their summit meeting in Tokyo on March 16, President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida agreed to resume “shuttle diplomacy,” in which the heads of both countries frequently visit each other.
If Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Korea becomes a reality, it will further accelerate the improvement of bilateral relations.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Kishida said, “I will consider a visit to Korea at an appropriate time.” It is the first visit by a Japanese prime minister to Korea in five years since former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in February 2018.
Former Prime Minister Abe visited Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics at the time.
Shuttle diplomacy between Korea and Japan has been suspended since December 2011, when former President Lee Myung-bak visited Kyoto and held talks with then-Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
Prime Minister Kishida invited President Yoon to the G7 Summit to be held in Hiroshima on May 19-21.
President Yoon is also planning a visit to Japan, so the leaders of Korea and Japan have come and gone one following another in a short period of time.
