Japan’s legendary musician Ryuichi Sakamoto announced that he was suffering from rectal cancer in early 2021. In October of the same year, the cancer cells spread to his lungs and underwent surgery twice. In an interview in June last year, he revealed that the cancer has reached the terminal stage, and his physical strength is not as good as before. Japanese media reported today that Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away in a hospital in Tokyo on March 28, and his firm has confirmed his death.
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s enthusiasm for music remained undiminished in his later years. At the end of last year, he broadcast a pre-recorded piano concert “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2022” online, attracting 30,000 viewers to watch online. On the day of his 71st birthday in January this year, he released the album “12”, which contains 12 songs like a diary since his fight once morest cancer.
