The Japanese government promoted US President Joe Biden’s first visit to Japan at the end of this month, but abandoned it due to the situation in Ukraine, Kyodo News reported on the 6th.

Kyodo News reported that it became difficult for President Biden to take time to respond to the situation in Ukraine, and the Japanese government abandoned President Biden’s visit to Japan, which was being prepared at the end of this month.

Prior to this, Prime Minister Kishida was reported to have asked President Biden to visit Japan in the latter half of April while he was visiting Brussels, Belgium to participate in the Group of Seven (G7) summit. However, it was reported that the US side was reluctant to propose a schedule in the latter half of May.

Along with this, the “Quad” (Quad, US, Japan, Australia, India) summit meeting that was scheduled to be held during President Biden’s visit to Japan was also postponed. The quad is a council formed by the United States to restrain China. Japan will readjust the dates with the participating countries to hold the Quad Summit in Tokyo in late May.

However, the quad summit schedule is still in flux with a general election scheduled for May in Australia. Kyodo News reported that President Biden may visit South Korea when he visits Japan. In this case, the first summit meeting between President Yoon Seok-you, who will take office on May 10, and President Biden is expected to be held.
