Manila, Aug. 31 (Jiji Press) — Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki has been selected as this year’s winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Prize, known as the “Asian Nobel Prize.” The award was announced on Aug. 31.

The Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation also selected three more individuals and one group as 2024 laureates.

Miyazaki, a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, created many anime works about complex topics such as environmentalism and peace and made them accessible to children, the foundation said.

The award ceremony will take place in Manila in November.

The award recognises individuals and groups who have made a special contribution to Asia. It was established in honour of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, who was known for his outspoken political stance and died in a plane crash in 1957.
