Visiting Korea with the movie ‘If I Look Into Your Eyes’… Japan Academy Award for Best Actress
Director Sho Miyake “The most touching visit to Korea”
In the ring, Keiko is stronger than anyone else, but outside the ring, she is the underdog among the weak. As for whether he has a point card, he is at a loss as he cannot understand what the cashier is saying, and even when a passer-by who hits him on the shoulder shouts, he cannot argue.
Director Sho Miyake introduced, “Although it dealt with boxing, it is a work depicting a woman who lives and fights in and out of the ring day by day.”
Perhaps that is why the film shows a journey of hardship, not a record of victory. Among the autobiography of Keiko Ogasawara, an actual deaf boxer, the part that recalls the days of trial and error was borrowed.
“Isn’t there only a highlight scene in (life)?” said director Miyake.
Director Miyake warmly and calmly depicts Keiko’s adversity, drawing the audience to focus on her life. This intention was also reflected in the filming of the film on 16mm film instead of digital. When Keiko is doing sign language, subtitles do not appear right away, but sometimes subtitles appear in white letters on a black background only following sign language is over.
Director Miyake said, “I thought that the unique texture of the film would make the audience look at the character dearly and give them the feeling of touching it with their eyes.” “he explained.
Along with director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who is famous for “Drive My Car” (2021), he is considered a next-generation director to lead the Japanese film industry. His debut film ‘Playback’ (2012) was invited to compete at the Locarno Film Festival, and ‘Your Bird Can Sing’ (2020) was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and received attention. The film was officially released in Korea following screening at the Jeonju International Film Festival. At the time, director Miyake tried to come to Korea, but was blocked by the Corona 19 epidemic.
He said, “I go to many countries for promotion, but visiting Korea is the most touching,” and emphasized, “(After the pandemic), it is a miracle that the world has become a world where you can meet Korean audiences and watch movies on the screen.”
‘Look into your eyes’ also premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year and was released as an Asian premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.
Kishii said, “When we showed this movie in Busan last year, we promised that it would be released in Seoul as well, and we are happy to actually come and share the movie.”
