According to The Sun newspaper, the cost of the project to create a high-speed train that will travel along the Tokyo-Nagoya route will be 78 billion euros.
Japan is home to high-speed trains, the first of which were built in 1964. According to project developers from the Central Japan Railway Company (CJRC), most of the route (86%) of the new train will be built in tunnels, which explains the high cost of the project.
The new train was originally expected to launch in 2027, but the company recently announced that the project would be completed in 2034 at the earliest. However, Japanese media claim that the new line might be launched much earlier.
CJRC President Shunsuke Niwa told a meeting at Japan’s Ministry of Transport that the company might not give an exact completion date for the project, but would do its best to launch the maglev “as soon as possible.”
The delay in the project is due to opposition from environmentalists who oppose the construction because the route passes through the Minami Alps National Park, which has been designated a biosphere reserve. The timing is also affected by the high labor intensity of tunneling. One of the tunnels will be built under Japan’s Southern Alps, making it the deepest ever built in the country.
