Japan Mania Takes Over Lucca Comics & Games
Ah, November 2nd! A day that will live in infamy. Or, at the very least, a day that will be eternally marked in the calendars of anime aficionados! Yes, my friends, it’s the longest day of Lucca Comics & Games, and thousands flocked to the Sorbano Exhibition Centre like moths to a very flashy, cosplaying flame.
Listen to this: many people took it upon themselves to reach Japan Town on foot. Now there’s dedication for you! Perhaps they were trying to channel their inner shōnen heroes, or maybe they just wanted to avoid the shuttles that were running like a slow train in a bad anime. Either way, it turned into an epic quest to enter this paradisiacal portrayal of the Land of the Rising Sun.
The Cultural Feast Awaits
Once inside, the chaos of long queues was no match for what lay beyond those gates—an incredible display of culture that makes the wait feel like a mere commercial break in an anime series. Japan Town was back, and it came back strong! Think bustling market stalls filled with all the gewgaws, gadgets, and gizmos you could dream of, alongside costumes that would make even Gundam blush.
You’ve got your beloved One Piece, your nostalgic nods to Dragon Ball, and enough vintage cartoon figures to fill a pop culture museum—and probably a few bootleg shops, too. On the upper floor are the associations—your chance to get involved! You could partake in contests or workshops, or just gaze in awe at the retro charm of the Saint Seiya Vintage Italia exhibition. It’s like walking into an episode of your favorite childhood show, only you’re allowed to touch the action figures!
Meet Your Makers
And if you fancied a bit of personalized art, you’d head over to the Lucca Manga School. Young, aspiring artists waited eagerly to showcase their skills. Hopeful fans could have drawings dedicated to them. Imagine, “To my biggest fan, I hope you enjoy this sketch of your favorite character!” Cue tears of joy, as well as excitement so vivid it could rival a supernova.
The Sounds of Japan
And let’s not forget about the entertainment! There’s an area dedicated just for performances, complete with a stage where singers took the crowd on a musical journey through Japanese culture. It’s like a live-action glee club, but with a far more vibrant wardrobe and fewer awkward high school dramas.
The Underbelly of the Experience
But now let’s address the elephant—or rather, the *traffic jam*—in the room. While Japan Town was buzzing with joy, the trek to get there required patience, perhaps akin to waiting for your favorite anime season to drop. Shuttle waits were reported at around 20 minutes, which is hardly two episodes worth of patience, but alas, dense traffic posed quite an obstacle.
It seems our fair citizens were left with two choices: endure the lengthy shuttle service or embark on a 20-25 minute trek. Considering the average human makes it to their sofa within mere seconds, walking through traffic isn’t exactly a stroll in the park—but when duty calls (or rather, when Japan Town beckons), one must answer!
Japan Town: The Jewel of Lucca
In the grand tale of Lucca, Japan Town once again shined as the jewel in the crown, propelled by art from none other than famed manga artist Yoshitaka Amano. It’s the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae, although getting there without waiting in line feels like trying to defeat a final boss—exhausting but oh-so-rewarding!
So, as we close the chapter on this hectic yet delightful day, we salute Japan Town for not just capturing our hearts but also our imaginations—even if we had to work off some calories walking there! Here’s to more conventions where we embrace all things Japan and geek culture, perhaps even through the magic of cosplay… or simply through a well-placed vending machine filled with Pocky!
Japan mania exploded on the longest day of Lucca Comics & Games. Today (November 2), a massive crowd surged into Japan Town at the Sorbano Exhibition Centre, with many attendees opting to make the journey on foot despite the ample shuttle services available. Long lines greeted eager fans at the entrance, but the rich cultural offerings inside made the wait completely worthwhile.
This year, Japan Town returns in splendid fashion, featuring an exciting array of market offerings, including an extensive selection of gadgets, costumes, and apparel inspired by Japanese culture, along with a vibrant showcase of manga, anime, and a plethora of action figures. Among the highlights are iconic franchises such as Gundam, One Piece, and Dragon Ball, alongside beloved characters from vintage cartoons.
There is truly something for all tastes and passions. On the upper floor, various associations invite visitors to engage in contests, workshops, and exhibitions. A standout feature in this edition of Lucca Comics & Games is the exhibition curated by the Saint Seiya Vintage Italia association. Another area that has sparked significant interest among attendees is the dedicated space for Lucca Manga School, where aspiring designers generously offered their talents by creating custom drawings and signing their works. Additionally, the entertainment area in the auxiliary pavilion outside the main exhibition center—connected by a staircase on the west side—has become a lively hotspot, with a stage that regularly hosts performers singing traditional songs of Japanese culture.
The sore notes of Japan Town certainly do not concern the vibrant internal offerings but rather pertain to the time required to reach the fairgrounds. Lucca Crea has significantly enhanced its shuttle service, and around noon, the wait to board was a manageable 20 minutes. However, the traffic leading to the area has been incredibly heavy since early morning, making it challenging even for buses to navigate. Consequently, many attendees opted for a 20-25 minute walk, carefully maneuvering even along the motorway overpass. Upon arriving in the Polo Bertolli area, however, the wait continued, with the public experiencing waits of 45 to 60 minutes to access the pavilion in the early hours. It is possible that wait times could extend further into the afternoon.
Japan Town once again shines as the jewel in the crown of this year’s event, particularly with the promotion driven by the captivating event poster crafted by renowned manga artist Yoshitaka Amano.
