Japan has successfully launched its new flagship large rocket, H3.

It entered orbit as planned in a second attempt a year after its launch failed last year due to an engine ignition problem.

The Japan Aerospace Research and Development Organization announced that it launched H3 Unit 2 at 9:22 a.m. today from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Kyushu.

After launch, it was announced that the second stage engine of the H3 rocket, which had failed in March of last year, burned as planned and that Unit 2 had reached its target orbit.

H3 is a two-stage liquid fuel rocket developed by Japan to enter the satellite launch business in earnest. Compared to the existing rocket, H2A, the thrust per engine is 40% stronger and the launch cost is half.

Kyodo News said, “H3 will establish itself as the main rocket that will take charge of Japan’s space transportation for the next 20 years,” and added, “It is expected to participate in full scale in the satellite launch project, where demand is expanding around the world.”
