During the first eight weeks of 2024, almost 400 cases were already recorded in the country. “There are still many unknown factors regarding the mechanisms behind the fulminant (severe and sudden) forms of streptococci, and we are not in a stage in which we can explain them,” they have assured from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.

This infection has a symptoms very similar to that of Covid-19, causing runny nose, sore throat, strep throat, tonsillitis and pneumonia and meningitis in the worst cases. It is common among those under 50 years of age, although it is people between 30 and 50 years of age who suffer the most from this bacterial infection, which can even cause death.

During 2023, 900 cases of this infection were recorded, but the rapid spread this year (378 in the first two months) puts health authorities on alert, who consider key prevention to avoid record numbers. Constantly washing your hands and protecting yourself from coughing and sneezing is once once more highly recommended.

This infection is contracted by half air, just like Covid, for direct contactcontaminated objects and wounds or sores on the skin.
