Discharge of wastewater from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant was halted following Friday’s earthquake, the plant’s operator said, stressing the move was a precautionary measure.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the northeastern region of Fukushima at 00:14 a.m. Friday (Thursday 1514 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. In 2011 the nuclear power plant was seriously damaged by the tsunami.
“We have confirmed remotely that there are no abnormalities in the ALPS treated water dilution/discharge facilities, etc.,” Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said on X, formerly Twitter, referring to the water release process.
“However, to be safe, we have stopped operating the facility in accordance with previously determined operational procedures,” he said.
Japan’s nuclear regulatory authority also said shortly following the earthquake that no abnormalities had been detected, either at the still-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, or its sister plant, Fukushima Daini. (AFP/M-3)
