Local media quoted the Coast Guard as saying that the images taken by the underwater camera of the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s minesweeper that day showed that the wreck had the words “KAZU I” printed in blue on the hull, which might be confirmed as a missing sightseeing boat.
Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Tiefu Saito said at a meeting of the accident response headquarters that night that he would confirm whether there were passengers inside the sunken ship as soon as possible in order to search for the remaining 12 missing persons.
On the 23rd of this month, a sightseeing boat carrying 26 people lost contact in the waters near the Shiretoko Peninsula. So far, 14 people have been found dead. According to the Shiretoko Excursion Ship company, which owned the ship, the crew included 24 passengers and two crew members.
