Japan Embraces Electric Air Taxis: Joby and Archer’s Plans for Urban Mobility

Japan’s densely populated urban centers have long been regarded as trailblazers in transportation innovations, beginning with the world’s inaugural high-speed or “bullet” train introduced in 1964, setting the stage for the potential early adoption of electric air taxis.

On November 4, Joby Aviation, backed significantly by Japan-based automotive giant Toyota, successfully conducted its first flight of the four-passenger S4 air taxi in Japan. The demonstration, which took place against the picturesque backdrop of Mount Fuji, showcased the aircraft’s capabilities. However, the company has yet to reveal its intentions regarding commercial passenger flights in the region.

In a recent announcement, Archer revealed plans to sell up to 100 of its Midnight aircraft—each configured to carry four passengers—to enhance transportation options for Japan Airlines customers. These air taxis will be strategically deployed in major Japanese cities, facilitating seamless access to airports, with operations managed by Soracle Corp., a collaboration between Japan Airlines and Tokyo’s Sumitomo Corp.

Both Archer and Joby are gearing up for demonstration flights set to take place at the highly anticipated World Expo 2025 in Osaka, further emphasizing their commitment to pioneering air taxi services in Japan.

Archer’s interest in partnering with Japan Airlines stems from the airline’s extensive network, servicing 65 airports throughout the archipelago, as explained by Andrew Cummins, Archer’s senior director of strategy and business development. “Archer is focused on markets where we can deploy a significant number of aircraft over time, and Japan is a good place for that,” Cummins elaborated, indicating that significant efforts would concentrate on commercial operations in Tokyo and Osaka.

Cummins identified a crucial route in Tokyo that would connect the city’s bustling center to Narita International Airport. This journey, which can take up to two hours by conventional road or rail transport, illustrates the efficiency electric air taxis could offer.

While Archer plans to operate its aircraft as an airline within the U.S., it also intends to collaborate with local operators globally, believing that partnering with experienced entities will facilitate smoother integration into international markets. “We believe that it is much more effective for us to partner with skilled operators who have the local knowledge, expertise, credibility and understanding of how to operate in other nations,” remarked Cummins.

Despite the excitement surrounding electric air taxis, the timeline for launching commercial services in Japan remains uncertain. Cummins speculated that the United Arab Emirates may emerge as a frontrunner for the first international deployment of air taxis, citing the UAE government’s commitment to expediting air taxi certifications—potentially ahead of the FAA’s timeline.
