Japanese media reported that the issue of nuclear wastewater discharge has affected Japan-China diplomacy, and China has asked the leader of the Komeito Party to postpone his visit to China.

According to Japan’s Kyodo News, the Komeito Party announced on Saturday (August 26) that party leader Natsuo Yamaguchi’s planned visit to China from the 28th to the 30th has been postponed. It is reported that the Chinese side informed that considering the current state of relations between the two countries, the timing is inappropriate.

Komeito revealed that the Chinese side stated that it values the Komeito’s continuous friendly exchanges over the years and spoke highly of the efforts it has made to visit China. Yamaguchi said in the interview: “Because of many attempts to visit China, coordination has continued. I regret (for the postponement). I will work hard to finalize the schedule once more.”

When talking regarding the discharge of nuclear water into the sea starting on the 24th, Yamaguchi said, “I don’t think there will be any impact.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had previously entrusted Yamaguchi with a personal trust written to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Kyodo News reported that the extension shows that the deterioration of Japan-China relations seems inevitable.
