Japan breaks the Internet speed record by reaching 1.02 Petabits per second using fiber optics | Technology

A lab in Japan continues to break internet speed records, hitting petabits per second for the first time.

Imagine that you had an Internet connection with a bandwidth capable of download 10 million movie at 8K resolution at the same time. That’s what can be done with a fiber optic connection at 1 Pbps namely, 1 Petabit per second.

A petabit is 1,000,000,000,000,000 bits, or what is the same, 1,073,741,824 Mbps. In other words, it is a connection 3.5 million times faster than the standard 300 Mbps what we have now.

As incredible as this speed record, is that It has been achieved using optical fiber compatible with currentso theoretically it might be implemented through the current lines, although adapters and converters would be necessary.

This record is the work of a group of engineers from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of Japan (NICT).

It is the same team as in June 2021 reached 319 Tbps of speed. In one year they have tripled it. an amazing achievement.

These Japanese engineers have used 4-core fiber optic cables instead of one, and a 552-channel laser what shoot at various wavelengths. These light flows are unified and amplified by amplifiers made of thulium and erbium.

The difference with respect to the experiment of a year ago, is that has increased the transmission bandwidth to 20 THzthanks to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology.

how it has been used standard 0.125mm fiber optic cable, means that this technology is compatible with installations of optical fiber current.

Using signal modulation and amplification techniques, Japanese researchers have achieved the speed of 1.02 Pbps, transmitting 57 Kilometers away. It is far from the more than 3,000 kilometers that reached 319 Tbps last year, but here we are talking regarding a speed three times higher.

Do not expect to contract 1 Pbps in your home for many years, but the important thing regarding this record is that it certifies that it is still possible to improve the current fiber optics a lotwithout having to change cables completely.
