Japan’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday (2/7) announced the basic principles for utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in seven areas to support the development of defense capabilities related to modern technological advances.
“Artificial intelligence can be one of the technological solutions to address fundamental changes in the security sector, due to the rapid advancement of science and technology as well as the declining birth rate and aging population that the country is facing,” the ministry’s document explained as reported by Between.
The basic principles identify seven key areas where Japanese authorities are keen to support the use of AI, such as target tracking and recognition, information gathering and analysis,
command and control, definition of logistics tasks, unmanned aerial vehicles, cyber safety and administrative efficiency.
“The use of AI will not stop at just those seven areas. AI is used to help decision-making, human involvement in the use of AI must be ensured,” the document said.
However, there should still be certain limitations to the use of AI, for example, when there is no previous precedent for the system to improve its own intelligence in past experiments, the document said. In addition, the Japanese Defense Ministry believes that special tasks related to information verification and incorrect use of data can be prevented.
There are still some risks in using AI, related to some homework on AI that still needs to be discussed, Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara was quoted as saying by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency at a press conference.
Japan will strengthen cooperation with the private sector and relevant foreign institutions and will also proactively convey the national defense ministry’s views on the use of AI, Kihara added. (Z-6)
