1984: A state of emergency is declared in Tunisia following a bread price hike led to bloody riots that left at least 80 dead.
2009: The Israeli army is advancing into the Gaza Strip with ground troops. After a week of air strikes, this marks the beginning of a new phase of the offensive in the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas. The international community is calling for a ceasefire.
2009: Theater manager Robert Jungbluth dies at the age of 80. He was commercial director at the Theater in der Josefstadt for eleven years, previously, among other things, director of the Wiener Stadthalle and director of the Theater an der Wien, as well as general secretary of the Austrian Federal Theater Association for 16 years.
2014: The Burgtheater misery of 2014 begins: The magazine “News” reports for the first time regarding the dismissal of Burgtheater deputy director Silvia Stantejsky on November 18th of the previous year. The reason given is irregularities in the management of the previous season, in which Stantejsky still acted as commercial director. According to Burgtheater director Matthias Hartmann, the house did not suffer any financial damage as a result. A misjudgment, as will become clear over the course of the year. 2019: After two brutal attacks on women in Vienna at the end of December 2018, the perpetrator was caught. In October, the man was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the Vienna Criminal Court and sent to an institution for mentally abnormal criminals.
2019: For the first time in history, a space probe lands on the far side of the moon: The Chinese “Chang’e 4” touches down at Aitken Crater near the south pole of the Earth’s satellite at 3:26 a.m.
