Jannik Sinner (ATP 4) had a solid start to the Australian Open. Coming to Melbourne without having played a preparatory tournament, the finalist of the last Masters defeated the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP 59) 6-4 7-5 6-3 in the first round.
Jannik Sinner (22 years old), one of the main outsiders of the Australian Grand Slam, was the first to enter the Rod Laver Arena in this 2024 edition. A break at the start of the match, another at the end of the 2nd set, and 4 games scored in a row following being down 2-0 in the 3rd set allowed the young Italian to seriously win in just over two and a half hours.
“It was my first match of the season, I feel good physically, I’m in good shape. It’s a tournament where I would like to play as well as possible“, said Jannik Sinner, who is the only player to have beaten world No. 1 Novak Djokovic between Wimbledon and the end of the 2023 season. Even twice, at the Masters (in the group stage) and in the Davis Cup.
