World number two tennis player Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Madrid Open due to a hip injury, Wednesday (1/5).
This means that Sinner’s opponent in the quarter-finals, Felix Auger-Aliassime, advanced to the semifinals with a WO win.
“Very sad to have to withdraw from my match in Madrid,” tweeted Sinner in X.
“My hip has been bothering me this week and it feels increasingly painful. Taking into account the doctor’s input, I decided it was best to withdraw so that this injury doesn’t get worse,” he continued.
Sinner’s withdrawal came minutes following world number three and reigning Madrid Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz, was knocked out in the quarter-finals following losing to Andrey Rublev.
Sinner, making his third appearance in Madrid, is 28-2 on the year.
The 22-year-old Italian won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and then won his second Masters 1000 title in Miami.
Sinner is scheduled to appear at the Italian Open in Rome next week, before appearing at the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, which starts on May 26. (AFP/Z-1)
