JANNIK Sinner won his Italian duel against Matteo Berretini on Wednesday (3/7) to advance to the third round of Wimbledon.

The world number one needed three tie breaks to win 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a tight match that ended 27 minutes before the 11pm local time deadline at the All England Club.

Berrettini, who was a 2021 Wimbledon finalist, was previously the Italian number one.

However, his position has been replaced by Sinner who has performed brilliantly over the last few years.

“We are good friends. We play together in the Davis Cup and sometimes train together,” Sinner said of Berrettini.

“It feels tough for us to have to face each other in the second round of a tournament as big as Wimbledon,” he continued.

Berrettini is ranked ninth in the world and became Italy’s number one player after reaching the Wimbledon final three years ago.

However, since then, his ranking has dropped to 59th in the world due to injuries that caused him to miss the Australian Open and French Open.

However, in the match against Sinner, Berrettini successfully showed his prowess by posting 28 aces. Much more than Sinner who only recorded 10 aces. (bbc/Z-1)
